There is something undeniably magical about sunrise sessions in the Tetons; the light is softer, and the entire landscape slowly wakes up in a way that feels intimate and unfiltered.
As a Grand Teton National Park photographer, I can confidently say that sunrise is one of the most breathtaking and underrated times to take photos here.
If you’re considering a sunrise engagement session, elopement, or couples session in the Tetons, here’s everything you should know before setting that early alarm.
Why Elope at Sunrise in Grand Teton National Park?
Sunrise in the Tetons hits differently. The peaks catch the first light of day, the valleys glow with soft pastels, and the air feels crisp and still. The world seems so quiet as the mountains turn that beautiful pinky orange shade. This is the time you will most likely encounter wildlife. Moose love the early mornings, and will usually be around some kind of body of water. Every time I have been at Schwabacher Landing during Sunrise, a big ol’ moose is hanging out and eating breakfast.
You get to start your marriage at the start of the day. You won’t have to spend a whole day waiting to say “I do”, or let those pre-wedding jitters get to you! You’ll be able to say you married your best friend as the world lit up with color. I mean, that’s pretty special, if you ask me.

Even if your permit isn’t specified for these locations, we can even start here, take it in, do a first look, and explore a little bit before your permitted spot & time for your ceremony.

Tips & Tricks
Tip #1: It Will Be Cold (Even in Summer)
Let’s be honest. Sunrise sessions in the Tetons are cold. Even in July and August, temperatures in the early morning can feel brisk, especially near lakes and open meadows.
What helps:
Layers, layers, layers
Blankets
Hand warmers tucked into pockets
Embracing the cold instead of fighting it
The good news? Once the sun crests the mountains, the chill fades quickly and you’re rewarded with that warm, glowing light that will defrost your bones.
Tip #2: Sunrise Is Early… Like, Very Early
Depending on the time of year, sunrise in Grand Teton National Park can be as early as 5:30 a.m. That means wake-up calls before most people are even dreaming.
It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
I recommend:
Going to bed early the night before
Packing outfits and bags ahead of time
Trusting the process, even when your alarm feels rude
There’s something special about starting your day with the mountains instead of a to-do list.
Tip #3: Popular Spots Can Still Be Crowded
This surprises a lot of couples. Even at sunrise, some of the most iconic Teton locations can have other photographers, hikers, or early risers nearby.
A few things to keep in mind:
Be flexible and patient
Don’t expect total isolation at famous overlooks
Trust your photographer
Crowds don’t ruin the experience, but awareness helps set realistic expectations. And sometimes, sharing a moment in a beautiful place makes it feel even more alive.
That Post-Sunrise Glow

The Tetons become bathed in warm light, the landscape glows, and the photos shift into something golden and luminous.
